The Partner Visa allows the spouse or de facto partner of an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen to live in Australia permanently.

This visa is processed in two stages:

  • Subclass 309 Temporary Partner Visa

  • Subclass 100 Permanent Partner Visa

Applicants are first granted the temporary visa and later assessed for permanent residence.

Who Can Apply

You may be eligible if:

  • You are married to or in a genuine de facto relationship with an eligible sponsor

  • Your relationship is genuine, continuing, and exclusive

  • You meet health and character requirements

  • Your sponsor meets sponsorship obligations

Applicants aged 16 or 17 require parental consent.

Relationship Requirements

You must demonstrate that your relationship is genuine and ongoing. Evidence may include:

  • Shared finances

  • Joint living arrangements

  • Social recognition of the relationship

  • Commitment to a shared future

Short or convenience relationships are refused. Evidence quality matters more than quantity.

Sponsorship Requirements

Your sponsor must:

  • Be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen

  • Not have sponsored more than two partners previously

  • Not be barred due to past sponsorship breaches or serious offences
