Skilled Nominated Visa Subclass 190

The Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190) is a points-tested permanent residence visa for skilled workers nominated by an Australian state or territory government.
This visa allows you to live, work, and study in Australia permanently.

Key Features

  • Permanent residence from the date of grant

  • State or territory nomination required

  • Points-tested visa under SkillSelect

  • Access to Medicare

  • Ability to sponsor eligible family members

  • Pathway to Australian citizenship (subject to eligibility)

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for the subclass 190 visa, you must:

  • Nominate an occupation listed on the relevant state or territory occupation list

  • Obtain a positive skills assessment for your nominated occupation

  • Score at least 65 points on the points test

  • Submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) through SkillSelect

  • Receive a state or territory nomination

  • Be aged 18 to 44 years at the time of invitation

  • Meet English language requirements

  • Satisfy health and character requirements

Meeting the minimum points does not guarantee an invitation.

State or Territory Nomination

Each Australian state and territory:

  • Publishes its own occupation lists

  • Applies additional eligibility criteria

  • Sets nomination priorities based on labour market needs

State nomination requirements may include:

  • Specific work experience

  • Employment or residence in the nominating state

  • Commitment to live and work in that state after visa grant

Nomination criteria change frequently and are not uniform across states.

Application Process

  1. Skills Assessment
Obtain a positive skills assessment from the relevant assessing authority.

  2. Expression of Interest (EOI)
Submit an EOI via SkillSelect, declaring your points, occupation, and preferences.

  3. State Nomination
Apply for nomination directly with a state or territory government if required.

  4. Invitation to Apply
If nominated, you will receive an invitation to apply for the visa.

  5. Visa Application
Lodge your visa application within 60 days of receiving the invitation.

Points Test Overview

Points are awarded based on factors such as:

  • Age

  • English language proficiency

  • Skilled employment (inside and outside Australia)

  • Educational qualifications

  • Australian study requirement

  • Specialist education

  • Partner skills or status

  • State or territory nomination

Your points score is assessed at the time of invitation, not when the EOI is submitted.

Where You Can Apply From

You may submit your EOI while:

  • Inside Australia, or

  • Outside Australia

At the time of visa application:

  • You may be inside or outside Australia

  • If applying onshore, you must hold a valid substantive visa or eligible bridging visa

Certain visa refusals or cancellations may affect eligibility.

Obligations After Grant

By accepting a subclass 190 visa, you agree to:

  • Live and work in the nominating state or territory

  • Make a genuine effort to settle in that state for a reasonable period

The visa is permanent, but nomination obligations are taken seriously by states.
