Visa for Training (Subclass 407)
The Training Visa (Subclass 407) allows individuals to travel to Australia for structured workplace based training or professional development.
This visa is designed to help applicants improve skills, gain registration, or enhance expertise in their current occupation.
This visa does not lead to permanent residency and is strictly limited to approved training activities.
What This Visa Allows
With a Subclass 407 visa, you may:
Undertake structured occupational training in Australia
Participate in professional development programs
Complete training required for registration, licensing, or skills enhancement
Bring eligible family members
Stay in Australia for up to 2 years, depending on the approved training plan
You must remain medically insured for the entire stay.
Who This Visa Is For
This visa is suitable for:
Professionals needing training to meet Australian registration or licensing requirements
Employees nominated by overseas or Australian organisations for skills development
Government supported trainees
Professionals undertaking workplace based learning rather than classroom study
It is not a general work visa.
Common Visa Requirements
All applicants must:
Be 18 years or older
Have functional English
Hold adequate health insurance
Meet health and character requirements
Demonstrate a genuine intention to stay temporarily
Be sponsored by an approved Temporary Activities sponsor
Training Streams Under Subclass 407
Occupational Training
Training required to:
Obtain registration or licensing
Improve skills in an eligible occupation
Meet overseas employer requirements
Training must:
Be closely related to your current occupation
Include recent relevant experience
Occur primarily in the workplace
Professional Development
For professionals employed overseas who require structured training to enhance skills applicable to their role.
This stream is usually shorter and classroom based.
Sponsorship Requirement
You must be nominated by an approved sponsor.
Sponsors cannot be individuals or sole traders.
Your sponsor is responsible for:
Nominating the training program
Ensuring training conditions are met
Supporting compliance during your stay
Work Conditions
You may only work in activities directly related to the approved training
Condition 8102 applies
Secondary applicants may work up to 40 hours per fortnight
Any work outside approved training is a visa breach.
Visa Duration
The visa is granted for 6 months up to 2 years, depending on:
Training type
Training objectives
Sponsor justification
The length is decided by the Department, not the applicant.
Processing Time
Typical processing times range from:
7 days to 4 months
Bridging visas may be available if applying onshore and eligible.
Important Notes
This visa cannot be used for paid employment
It does not provide a PR pathway
