ENS 186 Visa Skill Requirements – Visa Aid Guidance

Skill assessment is a mandatory requirement for most ENS 186 visa applicants. Applicants must demonstrate that their skills have been assessed and approved by the relevant Australian assessing authority at the time of visa application. Visa Aid ensures that skill assessments meet Home Affairs requirements before visa lodgement.

Your skills assessment must:

• Be issued before the visa application is lodged
• Match the nominated occupation
• Be issued by the approved assessing authority
• Remain valid at the time of application

Any skills assessment obtained after visa submission is not accepted.

For instance, if
  • The skills assessment must clearly match the occupation nominated in your visa application. Assessments for similar or related occupations may only be accepted in limited circumstances and must be approved by the assessing authority.

Visa Aid confirms occupation alignment before application submission.

  • If you apply as a Registered Nurse (Paediatrics), your skills assessment must confirm eligibility for that occupation or an approved closely related occupation.

Applicants must always confirm occupation acceptance with the assessing authority.

Check My ENS 186 Eligibility
Validity of Skills Assessment

Most skills assessments are valid for three years from the date of issue. Expired assessments cannot be used for ENS 186 visa applications.

Visa Aid verifies assessment validity before application submission.

Work Experience Requirement

Applicants must generally demonstrate at least three years of relevant work experience in the nominated occupation.

Work experience must be paid and relevant to the occupation.

Full-Time and Part-Time Employment.

Full-time work is considered at least 38 hours per week. Part-time employment may be counted proportionally.

Casual employment may not be accepted.

Recognised Prior Learning (RPL)

Some assessing authorities may accept Recognised Prior Learning based on work experience. Acceptance depends on the occupation and assessing authority.

Visa Aid confirms RPL acceptance before assessment submission.

Part-Time or Secondary Employment

Part-time employment may be counted proportionally. Secondary or casual work must meet assessing authority standards to be accepted.
